AIT Shutdown, Rihana Becomes Richest Female Musician and other stories on social media this week

Nigerian social media was agog this week with several trending stories. Just in case you missed them, we are here with a recap. So lets get down to them.

Nigerians Reacts as NBC Shuts Down AIT

The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) during the week suspended the licence of Daar Communications Plc., owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) for conducting themselves in a way that is against broadcast ethics. Nigerians have taken to social media to express their feelings.

There is nothing in that letter from NBC to AIT that reaches the threshold for withdrawal of license and shut down of a Media house that we all know Government perceives as an “Opposition media”.

Wisdom should have actually instructed the FG against striking out at them. ✍🏾

    — Oby Ezekwesili (@obyezeks) June 7, 2019

Some Nigerians blamed President Buhari for the shut down, insisting the NBC acted upon his order. They pointed out the case of CNN against President Trump yet the president never shut them down.

The NBC (National Buhari Commission) waited for the wind up of #8thSenate, to shut down AIT cos he's aware NASS would stop him

    — God Bless Shantel (@SweetShantel) June 7, 2019

Opposition presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar also condemned the closure of AIT in a short note on Twitter

If, at this time, we stand by as the Press loses its independence, there will be little to differentiate us from a dictatorship. This should not happen. -AA

    — Atiku Abubakar (@atiku) June 6, 2019

But some other Nigerians came to the rescue of the government, insisting the NBC is within its rights to act the way it did.

#AITUnderSiege There are too many uninformed people on this app. People who came into existence in 2015..

NBC warned AIT about violating the broadcasting code and cited examples. The NBC broadcasting code was not written by Buhari. It was first drafted in 1993..

    — Dr. Guendouzi (Yaro mai Lokachi ) (@fimiletoks) June 6, 2019

While the NBC explained that AIT carried out media propaganda against the government, it hadn’t stopped AIT from approaching the court.

Fans Celebrate as Rihana Becomes Richest Female Musician

Rihanna’s fenty business endeavors have officially made her the richest female musician in the world, according to Forbes.

The 31-year-old is worth a staggering $600 million, according to Forbes — overtaking Madonna by $30 million, Céline Dion by $150 million and Beyoncé by $200 million. https://t.co/grmrFm12Yz

    — CNN (@CNN) June 6, 2019

Some Nigerians took to Twitter to celebrate her.
