President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Andela, Christina Sass, has announced her step down from that role effective from today. This brings an end to her 5 and half years of leadership.

But Sass won’t be stepping down to leave the company, rather she will be transitioning into a supporting role as the Chair of the Andela Advisory Council and the Andela Alumni Group.

An Ancient Philosophy Degree holder from the University of Georgia, Christina and 5 other brilliant minds co-founded Andela – a startup that specializes in training software developers in Africa and hiring them out to tech companies around the world in need of their skills and talents – in 2014.

Prior to co-founding Andela in 2014, Christina has served as an Advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer of The MasterCard Foundation on fostering collaboration among partners. She has also built youth education and employment programs in China, Gaza and the Palestinian Territories, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Under Christina’s leadership, the startup has in 5 years achieved giant strides. With a workforce of over 1,000, they now operate in Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. The startup has also raised a total of $180m from various rounds, with the last coming in January from investment firm, Generation Investment Management (Generation IM).

The startup has also been named the “Best Company to Work for in Africa” at the Great Place to Work Awards, “The Best Place to Work in Nigeria for 2018” by Jobberman and one of the twenty-five technology company to watch by The Wall Street Journal in 2018.

In a statement by Christina, she expressed her excitement at taking up her new roles at Andela.

I am excited to continue to Chair Andela’s Advisory Council, an extraordinary group of leaders whose expertise has helped to shape Andela. It has also been thrilling to see former Andelans make their mark on the world and I delighted to become their Alumna in Chief.

Sass also said that she will continue to explore entrepreneurial ideas with a focus on “connecting talented young people with meaningful work and empowering women”.
