It’s that time of the year again; a period where primary and secondary schools go on long breaks and students get promoted to higher classes. But it’s also that period when the holidays are longer, and parents try to force their kids to holiday/summer lessons by fire by force.
Luckily, we know one impressive way youngsters can get the most out of this holiday: learn to code! With the growing importance of STEM education, this holiday is a perfect opportunity for your kids to learn how to code.
And interestingly, we found some cool outlets looking to teach coding to youngsters this summer.
Andela TeensCode Africa
Introducing TeensCode Africa, a free coding summer club for teenagers launched under the Andela platform. Created by Andela developers, TeensCode Africa is partnering with schools to push computer science education into the curriculum.

The initiative is not just available to Nigerians. It is now also available in Kenya and Uganda. It aims to train 1,000 students by year’s end, and partner at least 1,000 schools. TeensCode Africa already partners over 15 schools and organizations in Lagos and Nairobi to provide coding education to teenagers.
The first ever TeensCode Africa Summer School classes in Nigeria will hold in August 2018. According to details on their website, teens will learn problem-solving skills, relevant soft skills, and web application knowledge.
Summer school classes will hold between 4th August and 1st September. Presently, there are limited slots available; 80 the last time I checked.
But surprisingly, TeensCode Africa is not the only holiday activity for teens to do. Here are two more you should know about.
Kids Code Academy
Not all coding classes are Lagos-based. Kids Code Academy is spreading the love for coding to other far away domains. This summer, Kids Code Academy is running a two-week coding class in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom.

The classes will teach young people the basics of game design. Classes hold between 6 August and 19 August. You can find out more on their website.
CodeLagos
Undoubtedly, this is the most popular and free way to learn how to code right in Lagos. CodeLagos is pushing hard to train 1 million Lagosians (including youngsters) coding within the next 12 years. It has already stepped up its efforts this year and has trained over 15,000 persons already.

CodeLagos also has a coaching session coming up this holiday and begins from 6 August. The Code Lagos “Out of School” programme is the third batch of training this year.
It is scheduled to hold in 14 areas in Lagos. These are Apapa, Epe, Surulere, Isolo, Ipaja, Ikeja, Ilupeju, Lekki, Meiran, Onikan, Igbogbo, Oshodi, and Ikorodu. You can click here to register for this training.
TechQuest
Another interesting summer coaching on coding this holiday is TechQuest’s. Partnering with the GoDo.ng startup incubator, TechQuest aims to push STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education to youngsters all across Nigeria.

At its summer coaching session, youngsters will learn animation, game design, web design, robotics, 3D printing, and modelling.
Introductory classes begin on 30 July and end 10 August. While advanced classes will hold from 13 August till 24 August, with a second batch running from 27 August to 7 September.
CCHub Summer of Code
The Summer of Code by CCHub is another very interesting coding training. It is a 4-week interactive learning programme that introduces youngsters aged 5-18 years to computer science and programming.

The programme teaches them new skills and tools, improves their problem-solving abilities, and gives them new ways of expressing their digital creativity!
Youngsters are taught basic animation, game design, and web design. They also pickup soft skills such as collaboration, presentation, communication, time management and project management.
The training is scheduled for 30th July – 25th August 2018 and will take place in locations like Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, and Abuja. The training cost N30,000.
