Data Science Nigeria to Launch Dedicated AI Hub for the Data Science Community in Nigeria at the University of Lagos

Foremost Data Science Group in Nigeria, Data Science Nigeria (DSN) has announced its plans to launch a dedicated community centre and an operational AI Hub, within the university community (University of Lagos) for the purpose of cross-industry/academic research.

The hub will be officially launched on Friday, 8th of June, in the university premise.

According to the convener of DSN, Bayo Adekanmbi, the opening exercise is a first phase to fulfiling one of the 7 cardinal goals of the group for the year: a town & gown Research-driven innovation Hub to support PhD/MSc research works with a focus on solving social/business problems.

This will use a tripartite model that brings together rigorous academic research, industry R&D support and incubation support.Data Science Nigeria to Launch Dedicated AI Hub for the Data Science Community in Nigeria at the University of Lagos

The hub as designed can take 50 participants (seating arrangement without table) and 30-36 (seating arrangement with table). It will serve for data science enthusiasts and experts to fraternize, learn, share ideas and run projects.
DSN also plans to utilize the space for face to face masterclasses, industry meet-ups as well as Skype conferences with our over 100+ mentors from across the globe.

The unveiling ceremony will hold on Friday by 12noon at the University of Lagos with the VC, Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe and Dr Uyi Stewart, DSN advisor and Chief Data Scientist, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle, the USA in attendance. This will be followed by a media interaction.

Recall that it unveiled its 7-point agenda for the year in December 2017. The agenda entailed a list of mega-events focused on BIG DATA FOR DIGITAL/FINANCIAL INCLUSION.

These include an Inter-School machine learning awareness/competition for students from Universities and Polytechnics across the country (BSc to PhD) with the aim of introducing 10,000 students to possibilities in AI, ML, Data science. MR Adekanmbi explained that the aim of the event is to broaden the reach of the group as well as introduce more Nigerians to Data Science.

The cardinal programme of DSN in 2018 is focused on its 3rd annual Data Science Bootcamp and Hackathon. The Bootcamp is designed to explore emerging trends in Natural Language Processing, chatbot development and Deep learning.
