1: #AFFDisrupt 2019

Earlier in May, Access Bank Nigeria through its pan-African accelerator, African Fintech Foundry (AFF) held its 2019 Disrupt Conference. The event saw it bring together over 2,000 tech enthusiasts, stakeholder and entrepreneurs to discuss how to build a sustainable tech economy.

2: #MESTAfricaSummit
An annual event, this year witnessed the 4th edition of the MEST Africa Summit. The 3-day event which took place in June held in collaboration with Microsoft in Nairobi, Kenya. The summit brought together leading entrepreneurs, investors, ecosystem players and tech big guns from across Africa and beyond to discuss challenges and opportunities in the African tech space.

3: #TechpointInspired

In the same month of June, the 3rd edition of the #TechpointInspired Conference held. The “largest tech conference in West Africa” was organised by Techpoint, a news publishing platform and it brought together some of the best tech minds around the continent.

4: #ConcatenateConference

A Nigerian developer conference, turned an African conference, the event held in October this year. After a successful first edition in Lagos last year, the event expanded to have two locations this year, Lagos (Zone Tech Park) and Nairobi (United States International University). .

Now with the shutdown of the service in Nigeria, @travelstartng , an online travel company will take over all the operational business of Jumia Travel in Nigeria. Already, the Jumia Travel website is showing a ‘stubborn’ pop up that redirects users to Travelstart’s site. Read more  about  it on Technext.ng .

The startups, @farmcrowdyng , @sociallender , @coldhubs and @foodlockerng were among the 16 startups from nine different countries selected for the 3-month program.

Founded in 2016 by @onyeka.akumah , #Farmcrowdy has helped to connect small-scale farmers to sponsors who fund their farming project while also providing them with a ready market for their goods. Since launching, the startup has over 25,000 farmers on its platform with operations across 14 states.

#Foodlocker is an agritech business based in Ibadan, Nigeria. The startup runs an online and physical space for the sale of its agro-products across the country. 
#Coldhubs is also another startups solving a key issue in the agricultural space – waste. This the startup does by providing cold storage units powered by solar energy hubs to small farmers across Nigeria.

#Sociallender is a Fintech startup. Founded in 2015, the startups provides credit facilities to individuals by studying their social reputation online. The startup analyses data from a user’s social media handle to get the understanding of the user’s creditworthiness.

According to Google, the new features will be embedded directly into Google Accounts.  Unlike Google’s earlier warning systems which alerted you about reused passwords in a separate browser extension or password check-up tool, the new features will provide warnings as you log in to sites on the web. The startup added that the *995# USSD code presented a simple and smart way to bank anywhere and anytime.

The introduction of the USSD service comes after OPay recently raised a $120 million Series B funding on the heels of a $50 million funding raised in July.

OPay’s popularity across Nigeria is growing, especially in the states where they have launched their ride-hailing services.  The super app’s model of providing discounted and affordable options of banking has drawn a major crowd of low and middle-class Nigerians unto their platform.
