naira redesign

Hi guys, it’s the last weekend of the month. For some, this weekend will be a back-to-back cruise as par salary week, and CBN’s decision to extend the old Naira notes would ease the pressure on Nigerians. But that’s not all we are here for. It’s the weekly social media roundup so let’s get back to business!

The past week has had a lot of events, big wins, losses, and premium gists here and there, and trust us; we have curated some of the top gists that got people talking, posting, and tweeting during the week.

While I am pleased with the extension of the old Naira notes because the new ones have been hard to find, I am more concerned about the competence of the BVAS device in the forthcoming election, especially with the Osun State over-voting saga.

BVAS collation gone wrong? Davido’s Uncle, Ademola Adeleke sacked as Osun State Governor

Davido’s uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, may be getting ready to leave the political scene just seven months after winning the governorship election of Osun State. His election has been declared invalid after an Election Petition Tribunal chaired by Justice Tertse Kume concluded that there was overvoting in over 700 polling units.

Over-voting implies that the number of votes cast surpasses the number of registered voters. This begs the question, wasn’t the BVAS used during the election? So how is this possible? Is the device not competent enough?

Nigerians have taken to the social media space to focus on the device meant to provide credible electoral results. Others have concluded that this was an arrangement by the opposing party, Action Progressive Congress (APC), to make people doubt the credibility of the device.

Speaking on the matter, the sitting governor, Adeleke, on social media has assured the people of Osun State to keep calm as they are working tirelessly to solve the issue. INEC, on the other hand, has not released any official statement, especially as regards the claims of the BVAS’s incompetence.

President Buhari Approves CBN’s Request To Extend Old Naira Notes Use

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the Central Bank of Nigeria’s request to extend the deadline for swapping old Naira notes to the redesigned ones. The new deadline is February 10th, 2023.

A seven-day grace period, from February 10 to February 17, 2023, has also been approved to enable Nigerians to deposit their old notes at the CBN after the February deadline when the old currency would have lost its Legal Tender status.

The President approved this request during a meeting with the apex bank’s governor, Godwin Emefiele, in his country home in Daura, Katsina State, today.

Nedu continues tackling BBNaija alumni

When we thought it was over, Nedu kept giving us the inside scoop on the Nigerian entertainment scene. The media personality still has a lot to say about our favourite BBNaija female celebrities after spilling the beans about their ‘hustler’ lifestyles.

He revealed the more intricate strategies the BBNaija female superstars used to maintain their social media standing and lifestyle. He asserted that, in his opinion, these celebrities use their body to fund their lifestyle and that this is one of the main reasons they attend the performance to attract clients.

Hmmm, crazy things are happening in Tem’s voice. Celebrities from BBNaija, however, are not letting this one slip. Former BBNaija stars Kess, Angel, and Khloe have shared their opinions on the situation via social media. These celebrities criticized the practice of labelling female Big Brother housemates as persons who use their bodies to get money,

Khloe speculates that Nedu’s remark might result from his marital problems. In summary of her post, she said: “even though”. What, then, can I say? Some online users agreed with Nedu’s assessment of the situation based on the way of life these women lead.

That was not all the smoke Nedu brought into the podcast show that day. Nedu also claimed that the percentage of straight guys in the entertainment sector is only 5% and that most Nigerian celebrities are gay or bisexual. With all the gist in Nedu’s head, he should start a gossip blog channel.

Well, despite the saga in the entertainment industry, some are making us proud.

Nigerian singer, Tems gain Oscar nomination

Tems big win+ BVAS competency and other stories

Like I said last week, Nigerian artists and music have never failed to disappoint us. They have made the continent proud. This time around, it is a big nomination. Remember the Black Panther 2 movie that came out last year? ‘Lift me up’, one of its soundtracks performed by Rihanna, was written by our very own, Tems.

The song gained massive global recognition and support and has been nominated for the Oscar awards in the Best Original Song category in the upcoming 95th Academy Awards. She is the first Nigerian musician to receive an Oscar nomination. Many Nigerians have taken to social media space to congratulate her.

Tems who started singing in 2018, has created an unbeatable success record in the Nigerian music industry. In 2022, she made history at that year’s BET awards when she became the first African female to win the Best International Category.

She has also been featured in several international collaborations. Her song with Drake and Future, “Wait for U“, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first African artist to debut at number one and the second Nigerian artist to top the chart.

This year, the big win continues. Apart from the Oscar nomination, her song ‘Higher” has also sold 500k+ units in the USA, making it eligible for Gold certification.

Big ups, Tems…
