Google Launches Nigeria Elections Trends Hub in support of the 2023 Elections

Google has launched a new portal, the Nigeria Elections Trends Hub, to support the upcoming 2023 general elections with credible information.

The platform will serve as an opportunity for Nigerians to search and engage with the trends related to the presidential and vice presidential candidates, parties, and issues through Google Trends.

The portal includes maps, graphs, and percentage values that show the search interest for all candidates over 30 days. Users can compare the popularity of searches for presidential and vice presidential candidates and trending questions about them.

Kola-Ogunlade, the Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google, West Africa, emphasized that this hub’s creation will enlighten and facilitate voters to make better and well-informed decisions at the polls. He said,

We’re empowering voters so that they are not simply watching from afar, but participating, engaging with, and shaping the political process in a democratic way.

The tech giant’s mission is to organize and make information universally accessible and useful. and the tech giant is looking to provide no room for misinformation around the 2023 election, marking Nigeria’s 24 years in Democracy.

According to Kola, “more accessible and useful political information improves the political process and leads to greater citizen participation.”

The Nigeria Elections Trends Hub is a part of a broader initiative by Google to support the 2023 election. The tech giant is also on a mission to effectively train news media publishers and journalists on reporting election stories through its News Lab.

It also teaches journalists how to use search and other tools for better storytelling, including data visualization, verification, and fact-checking.

The Google News Lab collaborates with journalists worldwide to fight misinformation, strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion within the news, and support learning and development through digital transformation.

With the initiatives put in place, Google hopes to stop the spread of false information while also assisting news organizations in utilizing cutting-edge technology to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their reporting.

Election misinformation and disinformation can severely threaten democracy and compromise the integrity of a free and fair election, especially given the company’s wide user base and reliable users.
