Hi guys, It’s the weekend already, and it looks like next week is starting really well as the 2023 World Cup is finally here. Football fans across the world have been anticipating the big event for years.
But while this has dominated the social media space in the last few days (Yes, football fans I’m looking at you), that is not the only major event trending this week.
As usual, we have curated some of the top trendy stories from the social space you might have missed. Just sit back, relax and enjoy these stories
Is Cristiano Ronaldo’s football career over?
So, there’s been a lot of controversy with your all-time GOAT recently, that his career may finally be coming to an end, but why is that a topic now?
On Sunday, Ronaldo opted to open out in an interview with Piers Morgan about the challenges he is facing at Manchester United, the disrespect from Erik ten Hag, and other club executives and this has caused a massive uproar in the football community, especially as his contract is not over yet with the club.
Now, before you throw blame around, let me explain what happened
I mean, it’s difficult to grasp how awful Ronaldo’s relationship with Manchester United is. It was his big first club in Europe, and given the sequence of events, it may be his last. Things haven’t been going so well for the club, which is evident as the club has changed managers more times than they have won titles in recent years.
For Ronaldo, it appears he wants to move on, but given his age, it might be difficult. As the squad suffers, many people expected that the club will sell the football legend, but Erik ten Hag insists that he is a key part of his plan to move the team forward, which the GOAT player somewhat contradicts in his interview.
Ronaldo has recently been playing as a substitute, which many felt was disrespectful for a legend.
During the match against Tottenham, Ronaldo exited the stadium after being called in as a substitute a few minutes before the end. This set tongues wagging, and Ronaldo spent a short time out of the first team but has since featured for the club before airing the interview with Piers Morgan.
Many fans have shown support, criticising the club’s treatment of him, while some think his ego is the major problem. According to multiple reports, the club is looking to terminate his contract. However, the star stated that he could retire after the 2022 World Cup if he leads Portugal to glory in Qatar.
Soar like an Eagle or NOT
Although the Super Eagles will not feature in the 2022 Fifa World cup, the team faced Ronaldo’s Portugal in an international friendly match in Lisbon.
The Super Eagles team arrived in the stadium with their usual trendy fashion, training all day as the team’s Twitter handler painted the timeline with their photos. Many Nigerians were thrilled about the match, but were you expecting the super eagles to beat the Portugal team even without Ronaldo?
Just a thought though. Many people felt the same but hoped for at least a goal or two before the game ended. The team that started the game was very good on paper with stars playing in the European top flight, but Bruno Fernandes put Portugal ahead within the first 10 minutes and that was it for many Nigerians.
The Super Eagles lost the match four goals to zero, and as usual, many unprofessional coaches on social media had something to say about it. Blames were flying everywhere, and stray bullets hit everyone, including the Assistant manager and Moses Simon from the Super Eagles team who were caught on camera pleading for Pepe’s jersey.
The Ghanaians had something to say, especially since they had just defeated Switzerland.
But if you know Nigerians, you know that there is always something that will eventually relieve the stress of a bad situation, and for this match loss, it was the pidgin commentator, who was the highlight of the day.
What do you guys think is the cause of the Super Eagle’s consistent failure?
Burna Boy and Tems on Grammy Award 2023 List
Afrobeats to the world!!!
Burna Boy and Tems have been nominated for the 65th Annual Grammy awards which will take place next year.
Burna Boy is not new to this but he is now the first and only artist from Africa to bag four consecutive Grammy award nominations since 2019.
For Tems, she seems to be moving at the speed of light in the music industry changing the trajectory of the Nigerian music industry and on her mandate we stand. The singer is the first Nigerian female artist to bag two consecutive Grammy nominations for her contribution to the hit collaboration with Future and Drake titled ‘Wait For U.’
The artist was nominated for the coveted honours in the categories of ‘Best Rap Song’ and ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance.’
Tems has really found her own way to penetrate the international music scene. In case you don’t know she is also a songwriter and producer and she has been using these skills very well and especially for legendary musicians in the international space. So, you can comfortably say the pen and vocals work for her.
The musician contributed to the Beyonce’s latest album, Renaissance and also co-wrote Rihanna’s comeback track “Lift me up”. Her song cover for the hit song, No Woman No Cry also got featured in Wakanda Forever. She has also surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify.
So yes, she might be the top female musician in Nigeria after all. Argue with your favs.
For many Nigerians, this is a huge win for the country and they are extremely happy for the duo
Congratulations once again to the artists as they SOAR higher
Okay, people, that’s all for this week guys. My final suggestion as the World Cup 2023 begins on Sunday, find another country to support.
See you next week.
