Burna Boy retains #1 spot as Asake maintains upward trajectory on the top Nigerian music chart on Spotify

Music streaming platform, Spotify has released its weekly global charts which normally reveal a list of Nigerian artists, songs, and albums that have dominated its platform over the course of the week.

The music platform which is fast becoming a destination for music lovers in Africa is rated one of the top music listening and streaming platforms for Nigerians with over 170 million subscribers and 80 million tracks.

Recently, the platform rated Nigeria as the second country with the most musical streams after Pakistan. Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu during a media chat in Lagos said that artists including WizKid, Burna Boy, Tems and Mr Eazi ranked amongst the top five exported local artistes from Nigeria on Spotify,

According to the report released this week, “Omo Ope (feat. Olamide)” by Asake and Olamide has been on the Top Songs list for Nigeria for the longest time, at 196 days straight. While Burna Boy has been on Top Artists Nigeria the longest, at 29 weeks straight.

For the top songs, Burna Boy has the most spots on Top Songs Nigeria. “Last Last” is the highest at #4 while DJ Khaled’s latest song “GOD DID” is the highest new entry on Top Albums Nigeria at #3.

On Top songs Nigeria, “Terminator” by Asake ranks number one for the first week of September. The song was written by Asake who is fast becoming a recurrent name in the Nigerian music industry with major hits like “Omo Ope”, “Sungba” and “Trabaye”.

The top five songs on the list are completed by “Bandana” by Fireboy and Asake, “Electricity” by Pheelz feat. Davido, “Call of Duty” by Zinoleesky and “Many Ways” by BNXN and Wizkid.

For the top artist of the week, Burna Boy continues to soar high above others, extending his streak to the 29th week straight on the Top Artists Nigeria chart. Burna Boy’s single “Last Last” continues to gain traction globally, smashing the record with the most spots on Top songs.

Other artists that make up the top 5 artist list in Spotify Nigeria include, BNXN fka, Buju, Asake, DJ Khaled and Fireboy DML.

“Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition” by WizKid has been on Top Albums Nigeria the longest, at 29 weeks straight. A major highlight is “KHALED KHALED” by DJ Khaled which is the biggest gainer on Top Albums Nigeria, up 62 spots at #51.

However, for the first week in September, Burna Boy’s “Love, Damini” remains the top album and is followed by “Bad Since ’97” by BNXN fka as Buju.

Others in the top five albums are DJ Khaled’s latest album “GOD DID” which debut at number 3, followed by Fireboy’s “Playboy” and “Omah Lay’s Boy Alone.”
