Burna Boy’s “Love, Damini” becomes #1 album in Nigeria on Spotify; Asake trends still

Music streaming platform, Spotify has released its weekly global charts which normally reveals a list of Nigerian artists, songs, and albums that have dominated its platform over the course of the week.

The average number of musicians streamed per user on the Nigerian audio streaming network, which debuted in 2021, has climbed also by 60%, and Nigerian music fans have created over 1.3 million custom playlists on the platform.

According to the report released this week, Asake maintained his position as one of the top most streamed artist on the platform, continually ranking amongst the likes of Burnaboy, Davido, Drake and Wizkid, who all together make up the top 5 most streamed artists in Nigeria.

Grammy awards winner, Burna Boy who has been on the lips of many this week after he released his latest album, ‘Love, Damini’ comes top of most streamed Nigerian artist on the platform, and is followed by Asake whose latest single ‘Peace Be Unto You’ continues to maintain streaming numbers enough to make him the second most streamed artist of the week.

The list is completed by Davido, Drake and Wizkid who also recently featured on Chris Brown’s album, Breezy.

On Top Songs Nigeria, Victony ranks as the highest new entry at #26 with an extraordinary performance of his single  Many Man – A COLORS SHOW –  a partnership between Spotify RADAR and COLORSxStudios. The hit track gave him a debut entrance into the music scene and it comes off the back of his previous EP, Outlaw EP.

According to the streaming network’s list, the top five tracks in Nigeria are ‘Peace Be Unto You’ (PBUY) by Asake, ‘Last Last’ by Burna Boy, ‘Overloading’ (OVERDOSE) by Mavins, Crayon, Ayra Starr, LADIPOE, Magixx, and Boy Spyce, and ‘PALAZZO’ by Spinall and ‘Girlfriend’ by Ruger.

The top five albums that were streamed the most, according to Spotify, are Burna boy’s ‘Love, Damini’, ‘Rave and Roses’ by Rema, ‘Chris Brown’s Breezy’, ‘Made in Lagos: deluxe Edition’ by Wizkid which featured the likes of Buju and Justin Bieber and ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ by Kendrick Lamar.

In the first quarter of 2022, music streaming service Spotify reported 422 million active users worldwide. This marked an increase of over 60 million in just one year according to Statista.

Technext earlier reported that figures from the company’s Q4 2021 report showed that the number of monthly active users on the streaming platform were at 406 million, indicating an 18% YoY growth from the 381 million recorded in Q3 2021 and the near top end of its guidance range.

The company witnessed a double-digit growth rate, particularly from the rest of the world, powered by excellent performances in India and Indonesia. Latin America also did better than expected.
