We are pleased to introduce to you our maiden regulation event, the GAT Summit (Government and Tech Summit) 2022. It is billed to hold on Thursday, July 28, 2022. With a proposed physical audience of at least 1,500 and a virtual attendance of at least 3,000, the event is billed to be the biggest gathering of government policymakers, political influencers, tech industry players, and enthusiasts in Africa.
The one-day event will provide an opportunity for players in the African tech ecosystem to engage with government stakeholders on contemporary issues affecting the tech industry. Going forward, GAT Summit will be an annual event where tech industry players will have the opportunity to openly discuss the effect of regulations with policymakers across Africa and proffer solutions that will accelerate growth.
This year’s event will feature panel conversations about major issues around three sub-sectors of the ecosystem: financial technology (Fintech), Media regulation and technology for governance (Govtech).
This year’s event has been jointly organized by Technext, one of Africa’s leading tech-driven media platforms, Ripples Nigeria, African multimedia online news platform and the Voice of the People 90.3FM, a Lagos-based people-focused talk radio.
Why the GAT Summit?
The ship of innovation in Africa has reached the port. In fact, you hear concepts like ‘Africa Rising’ and investments by out-players in novel ideas by continental indigenes tell the story of the journey better. There are arguments that it is overwhelming at this point, but discovery is always unstoppable.
We see tech disruptions across all fields these days. In finance, in the media, in government, in agric, in education, in biology, etc. And with this come arguments that these innovations cannot be left to float around, as it’s not clear that tech leaders today have the same commitment to align technology with a public purpose – the reason for regulations.
There is also no objective understanding between the different generations on the ship. Besides that, many are inherently distrustful of government and believe that the ‘greater good for the greater number’ will emerge through a popular and supposedly freer mechanism.
So, the idea of a GAT Summit has been birthed to ease the recurring friction between tech innovators and government, facilitating meaningful and constructive engagement – all to ensure that Africans and indeed the regulators and the regulated, derive the utmost benefits of innovation.
