On Thursday, May 26, Technext hosted a Twitter Spaces session leading up to the 5G launch in August and the potential it holds for Nigerians, especially the common man with low or no knowledge of the possibilities.
Speakers in the Spaces session include Adia Sowho- Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, who has successfully designed, built, and scaled tech-driven platform companies in emerging markets valued at over USD $100+ million, Kehinde Joda, Head, Marketing and Corporate services, FiberOne and Usman Haruna, a Freelance Journalist, Blogger and passionate Techpreneur.

Key points from the Spaces before the 5G launch:
It started with a conversation on what 5G is and how it is going to affect every and anyone, having previously been thrown into a state of confusion around its safety due to propaganda spread during the lockdowns in 2020.
One of the speakers, Kehinde Joda, who was the first speaker, explained what 5G promises. He noted that it improves the performance of everything we have now. It improves all sectors of the economy, brings more precision to businesses and faster and more powerful experiences and responses.
Another speaker, Adia noted that 5G represents a lot of excitement for her, given her experience in the telecom sector and media platform, stating she had managed a 1G network. 5G removes a lot of limitations on the internet, she added.
Speed, Latency and Capacity are what 5G brings. It’s 10 times faster than what we already have. 4G is Maserati, and 5G is a bullet train.

The speakers also reiterated the fact that 5G was a safe and significant upgrade from what pertains currently, the 4G, stating that users would not face any harm from using it.
5G is as safe as previous cellphone technologies have been.

In addition to that, Joda said clarified that there is currently no known ailment caused by 5G. “I believe it is safe,” he said. In addition, he added that the upgrade will revolutionise everything.

In response to the issue of lags in the network, Adia noted that with the introduction of 5G, lagging becomes a thing of the past. She added that the core of 5G is to eliminate lag.
On if 5G complements or would be better than the already existing fibre optics and network, Joda stated that 5G would complement what the fibre network is already doing, hence, bringing about the beauty of the internet.
5G cannot exist without the foundation of fibre optics. It cannot work independently without it.

Nigerians are already enjoying internet with fibre optics, however, with the upgrade coming with the launching of 5G, fibre optics would help the penetration of this speed and upgrade to the households of Nigerians.
Nigerians are already anticipating the 5G launch in the country by August according to the statement made by the Nigeria Communications Commission. The hope is that broadband will improve every sector of the economy.
