Wi-flix, Africa’s fastest-growing video on-demand streaming platform, has surpassed one million paid memberships in just over a year since its launch. And, to celebrate this, it has gifted 1,000 subscribers 48 hours free access to binge all of their favourite movies, series, children’s material, and live television shows.

The subscription milestone, Technext argues, may have been reached because the streaming platform added more content and expanded its distribution partnerships significantly.

In a post by TechEconomy, Louis Manu, Wi-flix co-founder and chief commercial and technology officer, expressed his excitement at the company’s one year growth performance.

We hit the 1,000,000th paid subscription milestone on the 3rd of March, 2022 exactly 12:13 GMT+1 by Elue, our valued customer from Nigeria. We placed a call to Elue to share this special moment and thank him specially for being a loyal customer.

He also said that reaching this 1 million+ subscription by over 300,000 users in just a year is a deal breaker for any streaming platform.

He further explained that the company’s growth percentage has increased tremendously in the first quarter of 2022, with a 51 per cent in revenue and 61 per cent in subscription.

In the last three months, daily customer re-subscription turnover has averaged 22x, compared to 9x in 2021.

Online streaming platforms in Africa

Despite the fact that Africa deals with infrastructural challenges, like low connectivity and high data costs, the number of active streaming platforms in the region has grown tremendously in recent years as the continent responded to the worldwide shift from traditional networks.

With online streaming being less expensive and more efficient, many Africans prefer to subscribe to a streaming platform because of its flexibility, and convenience.

According to Statista in 2021, Netflix has the biggest number of customers in Africa. It was predicted to reach 2.6 million customers same year. MultiChoice’s Showmax ranked second with 860 thousand memberships.

Disney+, another popular online streaming platform plans for a debut in Africa in June 2022 and is suspected to grow with over two million subscribers by the end of 2026.
