Meet Segun Ogunsanya, Newly Appointed CEO of Airtel Africa

Airtel Nigeria CEO, Segun Ogunsanya is set to assume the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa starting October 2021.

The new development follows the imminent retirement of outgoing Airtel Africa CEO, Raghu Mandava who has led the telecommunications company since April 2016. Raghu will step down from the Airtel Africa Board after five years at the helm of affairs.

In an official statement, Airtel Group Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal lauded Segun Osunsanya’s appointment.

We are delighted to appoint Segun Ogunsanya as the Group’s next Chief Executive Officer.  He has displayed significant drive and energy in turning around the Nigeria business by focusing on network modernisation, distribution, and operational efficiency.

“As we look forward to Segun assuming his new role in October 2021, we do so from a position of great strength as a result of Raghu’s highly effective stewardship. Raghu will retire from the Board with our very best wishes and sincere appreciation for everything he has achieved,” he added.

In his new role, Segun will be tasked with delivering Airtel Africa’s strategic objectives and leading the Group in the next stages of its development.

Meet Segun Ogunsanya

Segun Ogunsanya is a well-versed business tycoon with close to three decades of management-level industry experience across telecoms, banking and consumer goods.

On joining Airtel in 2012, Segun has served as Managing Director and CEO of the Nigeria subsidiary for over 8 years, supervising the overall management of the company’s operations in its largest market in Africa.

Prior to joining Airtel, he was the CEO at Coca-Cola Hellenic (Nigerian Bottling Company) in Nigeria between 2011 and 2012. Before moving to Nigeria, Segun had also led as CEO at Coca-Cola Sabco in Kenya for two years and spent more than 9 years dating back to 1999 in the same role at Coca-Cola, Ghana.

Segun worked at Coca-Cola for 16 years, serving as Head of Treasury, Budget & Accounts in his earliest role at the beverage company.

He is a Chartered Accountant and a graduate of Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Speaking on his latest appointment, the incoming CEO, Airtel Africa, Segun Ogunsanya said:

Having been part of the Airtel Africa journey for the past nine years, I am looking forward to taking up the role of Chief Executive Officer. On a personal note, as an African, I feel honoured to have the opportunity to lead a Group that continues to make a difference to millions of people, bridge the digital divide and expand financial inclusion.
