WizKid & Burna Boy Rule Spotify as Lagos, Suleja & Abuja Record Most Streams in March

Global streaming platform, Spotify finally launched in Nigeria last month. After the first 30 days, Grammy award-winning artists, WizKid and Burna Boy have emerged the most streamed artists in the country.

A report of activities on the streaming platform shows that Nigerian listeners listened to more home-grown artists despite having full access to Spotify’s 70 million songs, 2.2 million podcast titles and over 4 billion playlists.

The report covers Spotify user consumption between February 23 and March 22, 2021

Four out of the top five most-streamed artists in Nigeria are local artists. Topping the list are the country’s beloved superstars WizKid and fan favourite Burna Boy at number 2.

Davido, and Rema comes in respectively at number 3 and 5 on the list. The only foreign artiste in the top 5 is Drake at number 4.

“Bounce” by Rema, is Nigeria’s Most Streamed Song

In terms of individual songs, local hits were the most streamed. The report showed that “Bounce” by Rema was the most-streamed track during the month.

Wizkid and Burna Boy’s “Ginger” came in 2nd while Davido and Teni’s “FOR YOU” followed in Third.

Olamide and Omah Lay’s Infinity and DaVido, Focalistic and Virgo Deep’s Ke Star – Remix completed the top 5 list of most-streamed tracks in the country

With a strong appetite for local sounds, it wasn’t a surprise that Hot Hits Naija is one of the top-streamed playlists among users. African Heat comes in second reflecting listeners’ keenness to discover music from all over the continent.

Podcast listening may be a relatively new trend but it is fast gaining momentum among Nigerians. In the last month, the most popular podcast on Spotify is “I Said What I Said,” with “Kwality Kontent” coming in second. “TED Talks Daily” came in third, followed by “Articulate One” and “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah: Ears Edition” in fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Lagos tops cities with most streams on Spotify

Of the many cities around the country, residents of Lagos streamed the most song in the country while Suleja in Niger state follows in second place.

Abuja (3), Port Harcourt (4) and Benin City (5) completes the list of cities with most Spotify streams in Nigeria.

In Summary

Spotify’s first month in Nigeria has been largely a success. The just-released report showed that Nigeria’s love and resonate with local content more than international content.

Spotify revealed that it has tailored music experience for Africa with more than 100 expertly curated playlists across some of the most popular genres in the continent.
