Facebook Honours IWD With New Book Featuring Temie Giwa-Tubosun and Tara Durotoye

In honour of International Women’s day, Facebook is launching a book that showcases the stories of female leaders in Africa. The book, which is titled, LeadHERs: Life Lessons From African Women, spotlights 19 African women leaders in different areas of business.

Temie Giwa-Tubosun and Tara Durotoye are the two Nigerian women whose stories are included. Baratang Miya and Dr Judy Dlamini are from South Africa; Elizabeth Akua Ohene is a Ghanaian politician and journalist; Yvonne Okwara and Tecla Chemabwai are Kenyans; and Hawa Sally Samai is from Sierra Leone.

Others are Saran Kaba Jones from Liberia, Alice Nkom from Cameroon, Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu from Ethiopia, Lelemba Phiri and Monica Musonda are both from Zambia. Kalista Sy is from Senegal, Noella Coursaris Musunka is Congolese, Samantha ‘MisRed’ Musa is Zimbabwean. Vanessa Hau Mdee is from Tanzania, Djamila Ferdjani is from the Niger and Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim is from Chad.

In the book, the women shared personal experiences as well as the challenges they have had to overcome in their individual journeys. Each chapter picks a personal experience and life lesson and expounds on it to help future and younger generations find the wisdom to navigate similar paths later in life.

5,000 copies of the book have been printed, according to Facebook, and will be distributed across Africa through partner agencies that train young people to acquire digital skills. The hubs and agencies which include ccHub, She Leads Africa, Fate Foundation and DigifyAfrica are spread across 15 countries. All the women are illustrated in the book by four African female artists. The artists are Massira Keita from Côte d’Ivoire, Lulu Kitololo from Kenya, Karabo Poppy from South Africa, and Awele Emili from Nigeria. The International Women’s Day theme for 2021 is #IchooseToChallenge and the stories of these African women gives just the right incentive to young women to challenge limiting circumstances and go after goals.
