Jumia has suspended operations in Nigeria following the multiple deaths that have been recorded in the course of the #EndSARS protests across the country. The e-commerce company announced this on its website and clarified that the suspension of operations will be from midnight on October 22 and end by 8 am on October 23.

The statement on the website reads in part, “We ask all our customers, sellers, partners and stakeholders to join us as we use this medium to express our sorrow. We will resume our operations at the end of the curfew and continue serving our customers and sellers.”

Currently, the Jumia website only displays the image below with the message and nothing more.

With the curfew imposed on Lagos state, activities have been restricted for most companies, causing a halt of operations that cannot be carried out virtually.

Besides Jumia, no company has announced a suspension of its operations, however, labour unions, as well as some startups, have spoken up about the attacks on the #EndSARS protesters on October 20.

Ulesson, an e-learning startup founded by Sim Shagaya, tweeted hours after the attack at the Lekki toll gate, saying “We are deeply saddened by the reports of fatal injuries suffered by #ENDSARS protesters yesterday. We mourn with their loved ones. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. To everyone out there exercising their democratic rights, please stay safe!”

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), as well as the Nigeria Union of petroleum and natural gas workers (NUPENG), also expressed dissatisfaction with the violence unleashed on the #EndSARS protesters.

The PENGASSAN demanded that the federal government of Nigeria arrest all who were involved in the inhumane acts and bring them to book. It added that the union will be forced to declare a strike action if the FG failed to address the situation.
