Tweet Announcing Chadwick Boseman’s Death Becomes Most-Liked Tweet Ever with 7.1 Million Likes

The tweet announcing the death of Chadwick Boseman has set a new record on Twitter as the most-liked tweet ever. The Black Panther star died on August 28 after battling colon cancer for 4 years. He was 43 years old.

The tweet was posted by members of Boseman’s family on his official handle by 7pm on August 28. As at the afternoon of the 29th, it had 7.7 million likes while it had 7.3 million as at the time of this writing.

The post, which also had about 3.1 million retweets, was retweeted by public figures which include Dwayne Johnson, Barack Obama, Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and Marvel Studios chief, Kevin Feige. Twitter confirmed the tweet as being the most-liked tweet on the platform so far.

In-between his treatments for colon cancer, Chadwick starred in movies which include the Black Panther, Endgame, Infinity War, 21 Bridges, Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and the yet-to-premiere Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Da 5 Bloods, Black Bottom and some of his last movie projects were made for Netflix.

To honour Chadwick, Twitter reinstated the Black Panther while his fans organized Black Panther Twitter watch parties using #BlackPanther and #WakandaForever hashtags.

Following Chadwick Boseman’s death, audience interest in Black Panther, 42, and some other of his movies surged. Marvel’s Black Panther moved up to the top 5 five most popular movies on Apple and Amazon’s charts on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, the movie was number 2 on Amazon Video’s sales chart of best-selling U.S. movies. It was second only to the newly-released “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”

Another of his movies, 42, was No. 4 on Apple’s iTunes chart on list of top US movies, while Black Panther was number 5.

Before the post about Chadwick, the most-liked tweet was by Barack Obama. It was made after the Charlottesville attacks and had 4.3 million likes. Other posts that had been previously tagged most-liked by Twitter users were from people including Ariana Grande, Andy Milonakis, Kobe Bryant, BTS, and others.
