Netflix Breaks HBO’s Record With 160 Nomination in 2020 Emmys Nominee List

Video streaming giants, Netflix stole the spotlight at 2020 Emmy Award nomination ceremony. The streaming giant’s movies received a total of 160 nominations, breaking the record for most nominations in a single year.

During the virtual ceremony, HBO’s American superhero series, ‘The Watchmen,’ secured the highest Emmy Award nominations with a record 26 entries.

Emmy Award is an American event that recognizes excellence in the various sectors of the television industry.

Netflix Breaks HBO's Record With 160 Nomination in 2020 Emmys Nominee List

    Netflix Overtakes HBO

All thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix like other streaming platforms have received a major boost in users due to the lock-downs and stay at home initiatives.

Netflix especially won big, gaining more than 25 million users in the first half of 2020. The high amount of nominations received by the platform shows that the growth in its subscriber base was also significantly driven by the increase in quality movies and series on the platform.

In this years nominee list, Netflix series like “Unbelievable” and “Unorthodox” were nominated alongside HBO’s Watchmen for Best Limited Series

Similarly, Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” and “Dead to Me” was also nominated for Best Comedy Series while popular series like “Ozark”, “The Crown” and “Stranger Things” got nominations for Best Drama Series.

Netflix Breaks HBO's Record With 160 Nomination in 2020 Emmys Nominee List

HBO suffered from the absence of a former Emmys favourite, Game of Thrones, which concluded in 2019 after its eighth season. However, series like “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” and “Succession” bagged several nominations.

In total Netflix overtook its biggest rival, HBO, which previously held the record for most nominations with 137 in 2019. This year, HBO snagged only 107 nominations.

    Other Nominations

Although the nominations were dominated by Netflix and HBO, other streaming services also raked in significant nominations this year.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Marvelous Mrs Maisel” earned 20 nominations and Disney+, which launched in November last year, scored 19 total nominations including one for best drama series for its “The Mandalorian.”

Apple TV+, also debuted on the Emmy nominee list, garnering 18 nominations while Quibi made away with just 10 nominations.

The 2020 Emmy Awards will air on ABC at 8 p.m. on September 20. We wish all the nominees best of luck!

Things are gradually returning to normal as the nu Things are gradually returning to normal as the number of covid-19 cases continues to fall. Although it may take a while before we hug people or shake hands without second thoughts, things are getting better.

Only 523 new cases were recorded between April 6 and 13. This is a slight increase compared to the 497 people that tested positive over the previous week. Two weeks earlier, Technext reported that 584 people tested positive.

The numbers show a sustained decrease in the spread of infections across the country. Indeed the Lagos state government is now confident enough to allow event centres and relaxation centres to increase their crowd capacity. Along with that, here are other developments during the week.
