Breaking: Nigeria Overtakes 4th Place Morocco in Africa’s Covid-19 Update as NCDC Records 265 New Cases

Ejike Kanife

Just as I predicted, Nigeria overtakes Morocco in 4th place on the African Covid-19 log as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 265 new Covid-19 cases in the country to bring the total confirmed cases to 7,526.

This means the country has moved halfway to 8,000 cases just 2 days after crossing 7,000.

Lagos remained top on the daily update with 133 new cases. This brings its total to 3,357 representing 44.6% of cases in the country. Oyo state seems to be recording some serious numbers on the daily as 34 new cases put it second on the daily log with a total confirmed cases of 233.

Edo is another state racking up the numbers with 28 new cases while Ogun managed 23 new cases to finish the day with 219 cases. The FCT got 22 new cases and remained third on the general log with a total of 469 cases. Kano is conspicuously missing from the update.

By regions, the Southwest (Lagos, Oyo, Ogun) and the Northcentral regions (Plateau, Niger and Kwara) got the highest representation with 3 states each. The Northeast (Borno and Bauchi) and the Southeast (Anambra and Enugu) got 2 states each. The Southsouth (Edo) and Northwest (Kaduna) have one each.

Testing, recoveries, deaths and active cases

A total of 1,421 new tests were carried out in the day in review. This brings the total number of tests carried out in the country to 43,328, which is still a huge shortfall for a population of more than 200 million.

NCDC reported 167 new recoveries for the day in review to bring the total number of discharged cases to 2,174. This gives the nation a recovery rate of 28.8% which is a huge improvement from 27.6% recorded the day before.

Breaking: Nigeria Overtakes Morocco in 4th Place on Africa's Covid-19 Update

No new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours as the total number of Covid-19 deaths remain stagnant at 221. This gives the country an improved mortality rate of 2.9%, down from 3%.

The total number of active cases in the country is currently 5,131 representing 68.1% of the total confirmed cases in the country.

Africa and the world

South Africa continues to dominate the continental scene with a whopping 1,218 new cases to bring its total to 21,343. Egypt is second with 727 new cases to finish the day with 16,513 while Algeria is third with 195 new cases, closing the day with 8,113.

Nigeria overtakes Morocco in 4th place as I predicted with a total of 7,526. Morocco has 7,406.

Egypt still has the highest number of Covid-19 deaths with 735. Algeria is next with 592, South Africa has 407 deaths while Nigeria has 221 Covid-19 deaths.

In the world, the USA continues to lead with 21,734 new Covid-19 cases to finish the day with a total of 1,666,828 confirmed cases. This represents 30.8% of the total cases worldwide. There are 446,914 recoveries in that country while 98,683 people have died.

Globally, more than half a billion people have been infected with the virus. More than 2.2 million people have recovered while nearly 350,000 people have died.
