When interesting things happen, people become curious to find out every detail about them. Google remains one of the first places to check for topics of interest.

To keep you updated with the topics that have been of most interest to Nigerians over the last 2 weeks, here are some of the most-searched words on Google.

Mbira

To mark the celebration of Zimbabwe’s cultural week, Google created a doodle for Mbira, a musical instrument native to the Shona tribe of the country. The doodle is a bit different from previous ones because it went even further to teach people how to play traditional and modern songs on the mbira instrument.

Seeing the instrument appear on the otherwise bland Google search page, has piqued the interest of many people and led to people searching for more information about it.

The topic has had more than 20,000 searches.

Big Brother Naija

Reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, will soon be back. As part of the online auditioning, MultiChoice announced that from May 20 to May 30 interested candidates can send in 2-minute videos explaining why they should be a part of the season 5 housemates.

The last edition of the BBN titled ‘Pepper Dem’, gathered more than #7.2 billion from fans who voted for their housemate through SMS. The show saw an increase in participation because the votes were almost double that of the previous edition ‘Double Wahala’.

There may be a virus in town, but it seems Nigerians and Multichoice have agreed that the show must go on judging from how many people want to know more on Google.

BBN has had more than 5,000 searches already.

Ravi Zacharias

Ravi is a Christian evangelist who passed on May 19 at the age of 74. He was an apologetic who took the Christian faith to people who were skeptics of it. Rather than make direct appeals for the faith, Ravi built a ministry based on intellectual argument for the faith.

Using philosophy, poetry, science and other areas of academia, he spent most of his life trying to show how Christianity provides answers to life’s most pressing existential questions.

His death came as a shock to many and the huge number of searches on Google attest to people’s need to know all they could about Ravi’s passing.

The searches for Ravi Zacharias are more than 20,000.

Buhari to address the nation

With the covid-19 still very much in town and putting a damper on economic and lifestyle activities, people want to know what updates President Buhari has to give the country.

On Sunday, May 17, it was announced that the president would give a national address the following day. However, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity disclosed on Monday afternoon that no presidential address was taking place as it had been cancelled.

The volume of search that was carried out on Google shows that people were indeed looking forward to the address as they very much wanted to know what the next steps are as regards lockdown and curfew.

The topic has had 20,000 searches so far.

Abacha

On May 5, the FG recovered $311 million that former military ruler, General Sani Abacha had looted to the United States. Questions surrounding the amount recovered, what it would be used for, how it was recovered drove Nigerians to search for Abacha on Google.

The amount increased significantly from about $308 million mentioned in the earlier statement to over $311 million, as a result of interest that accrued from February 3 to April 28, when the fund was transferred to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

It is no surprise that the recovered loot was a topic of interest for many. It has more than 10,000 searches.
