Nigeria finally crosses the 5,000 threshold as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) registers 193 new cases of coronavirus in the country. With these new figures, the total number of confirmed cases in the country hits 5,162, as of May 14, 2020.
Lagos continues its dominance on the daily log with 58 new cases of the virus. This is slightly more than 51 recorded the day before and brings total number of cases in the state to 2,099 representing 40.6% of total cases in the country.
Kano returned to second on the daily log with 46 new cases to bring its total to 753. Jigawa continues to rise on the daily log with 35 new cases. Yobe returns to the daily register after a long absence with 12 new cases. The FCT recorded 9 new cases to finish the day with 379 total confirmed cases.
Of the 15 states recorded on the daily log, both the Northeast (Yobe, Gombe, Borno and Bauchi) and Northcentral (FCT, Plateau, Kwara and Nasarawa) got the highest representation with 4 states each.
The Southwest has 3 states represented on the log (Lagos, Ogun and Ondo), the Northwest has 2 (Kano and Jigawa) while the Southeast (Imo) and Southsouth (Edo) both have 1 appease.
34 states with the FCT have recorded coronavirus cases. Kogi and Cross River continue to hold out without a single recorded case.
Testing, recoveries, deaths and active cases
Nigeria returns to doing more than 1,000 tests per day after recording just 990 tests the day before. With a total of 1,249 new tests on the day in review, total tests carried out in the country is now 30,657.
The country continues to churn out remarkable numbers of recoveries as 110 new recoveries were documented on the daily log. While this isn’t as much as the highest record of 124 recoveries (May 11), it is nonetheless quite impressive.
The total amount of confirmed recoveries in the country is now 1,180, representing a recovery rate of 22.8% which is a massive improvement from 21.5% recorded the day before.
Nigeria also got a reduced number of Covid-19 deaths as only 3 deaths were recorded in the day under review. This brings the total number of deaths to 167 representing a mortality rate of 3.2%, the same as 24 hours ago.
The total number of active cases in the country is currently 3,815. This means 73.9% of cases in the country are still active, an improvement from 75.1% documented the day before.
The Borno situation
Reports made the rounds on Wednesday that Borno state has lifted the lockdown imposed on the state indefinitely. Deputy Governor of the state and Chairman of the Task Force Committee on COVID19, Hon. Umar Kadafur explained that the suspension was due to the significant progress recorded in the last three weeks.
The deputy governor, however, failed to explain the nature of ‘significant progress’ made in the state. While Borno may not be Lagos or Kano or even the FCT, the state is up there as one of the states with more than 100 cases and with 191 cases, is very close to 200. Borno recorded 3 new cases in today’s update.
Unless the state government intends to stifle those significant gains it claims to have achieved, this might not be a very good idea.
Africa and the World
On the continent, South Africa doesn’t look like slowing down, recording 665 new cases to give it a total of 12,739. Egypt remains second on the continental log with a total of 10,829 after getting 398 new cases.
While Morocco is still third after recording 95 new cases to finish the day with a total of 6,607, Algeria isn’t far behind with 6,442 total confirmed cases. Ghana and Nigeria are also in view with 5,530 and 5,162 total cases respectively.
Egypt has the most Covid-19 deaths on the continent with 571. Algeria has the second most with 529 while South Africa is third with 238 deaths.
The USA still has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world with 1,455,644 total cases, representing 32.2% of total cases around the world. There have been 86,875 deaths in the country.
On the global scene, there are 4,519,986 total cases, 1,699,883 total recoveries and 303,026 total deaths. Global mortality rate currently stands at 6.7% while recovery rate is 37.6%.
