Breaking: Nigeria Hits 4,151 Cases 3 Days after Crossing 3,000 as NCDC Reports 239 New Coronavirus Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported 239 new Covid-19 cases in the country. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 4,151 as Nigeria crosses the 4,000 mark only three days after hitting 3,000.

Lagos got the highest number of new cases per state with 97, a huge reduction from 176 recorded the day before. This brings its total confirmed cases to 1,764 representing 42.4% of total cases in the country.

Bauchi has the second-highest number of daily new cases with 44. This brings its total confirmed cases to 161 as the northeastern state finished 4th on the log after jumping three places from the 7th it finished the day before.

With 29 new cases, Kano remained second on the log with a total of 576 confirmed cases while Abuja remained in third spot with 7 new cases and a total of 343.

For regional representation, the Northwest has the most representation on the day’s update with five out of the 15 states coming out of the region. The Southwest comes in second with four states representing the region. The Northeast and North-central both have three states in representation.

Kogi and Cross River state both remain without a single recorded case even though the Kogi situation especially, continues to be in doubt. 34 states, as well as the FCT, have recorded at least one case.

Recoveries, deaths and active cases

A total of 66 new recoveries were recorded in the country within the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of discharged cases to 745 and puts the nation’s recovery rate at 17.9%, up from 17.3% recorded the day before.

11 new Covid-19 deaths were recorded within the last 24 hours which brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths to 128. This gives the country a death rate of 3%, a slight deterioration from 2.9% recorded the day before.

The total number of active cases in the country currently stands at 3,278, representing 78.9%, a slight reduction from 79.8% recorded the day before.

Africa and the World

South Africa continues to lead Africa in total number of Covid-19 cases after recording 525 new cases to bring its total confirmed cases to 9,420. Egypt follows closely with a total of 8,964 cases after recording 488 new cases in 24 hours. Morocco is third with 199 new cases to bring its total to 5,910.

Algeria is in fourth place with 5,558 total cases while Ghana has the fifth-highest cases in Africa with 4,263 after recording 251 new cases in one day. Nigeria is currently 6th on the African log.

For total number of deaths, however, Egypt is up there with 514, followed by Algeria with 494 and Morocco and South Africa with 186 each. Ghana has only 22 deaths.

On the global scene, there are more 4 million confirmed coronavirus cases. More than 280,000 have died while more than 1.4 million have recovered. Global recovery rate is currently 35% while death rate is currently 6.8%.

USA has the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world with 1,347,003. There are more than 80,000 deaths in the country.
