Nigeria recorded an astounding increase in Covid-19 death rate as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 386 new cases of coronavirus for May 8, 2020. This latest update brings the national total of confirmed cases to 3,912.
Lagos led on the daily update with 176 new cases. While that is still a whole lot, it isn’t as much as 183 recorded the day before. This brings the total number of cases in the state to 1,667, representing 42.6% of total cases in the country.
Kano follows relentlessly with 65 new cases, giving it a total of 547 cases. The FCT returned to the daily update after a one-day absence with 20 new cases, giving it a new total of 336. The other states to have crossed 100 cases are Borno (142), Katsina (137), Bauchi (117), Ogun (113) and Gombe (110).
For regional representation, the Southwest got the highest number of regional representation with 5 out of the 20 states in the day’s log. The Northwest got four states, the Northeast and Southeast got three appease.
No new states made the daily Covid-19 entry which means both Kogi and Cross River marked themselves safe. 34 states along with the FCT have entered the register.
Testing, recoveries, deaths and active cases
Nigeria recorded 1,343 new tests to bring the total tests carried out in the country to 23,835. This is considerably more than 1,284 carried out the day before and means NCDC has recorded more than 1,000 tests for three consecutive days.
The NCDC recorded an impressive 78 new recoveries to bring the total number of discharged cases to 679. This puts the nation’s recovery rate at 17.3%, up from 17% recorded the day before, representing a four-day consecutive rise.
There were 10 new Covid-19 deaths in the country and this puts the total deaths to 117. While this is large, it is not up to the record of 17 deaths recorded on May 2. Mortality rate currently stands at 2.9% in the country.
With the increasing number of new cases, total number of active cases in the country is currently 3122. This represents 79.8% of the total number of cases recorded.
Africa and the World
South Africa leads in Africa for the total number of Covid-19 cases with 8,895 after conducting 307,752 tests. Egypt is second with 8476 cases while been stuck at 90,000 tests. Morocco is third with 5,711 cases while Algeria follows with 5,369.
Ghana has overtaken Nigeria in 5th place with 4,012 cases after conducting 149,948 tests. Nigeria isn’t far behind in 6th spot. Egypt currently has the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in Africa with 503. Algeria follows closely with 488 deaths. Ghana has only 18 deaths.
Globally, there are more than 4 million coronavirus cases in the world presently. Nearly 1.4 million have recovered while more than 276,000 have died. The USA remains the worst-hit country with more than 1.3 million cases and 78,599 deaths.
