    MTN, Safaricom and 4 Other African Tech Companies Shortlisted for Global Mobile Award at GSMA MWC Barcelona 2020

    6 African companies including MTN Group and Safaricom have been shortlisted for the prestigious Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO) from the GSMA. The awards will hold at the Mobile World Congress, Barcelona in February.

    The GLOMO Awards is a ceremony that recognizes and honours the individuals, teams, organizations and the partnerships that have redefined what it means to be connected.

    The MWC Barcelona 2020 marks the 25-years anniversary of Global Mobile Award in the mobile and digital world.

    The shortlisted nominees were selected by a panel of more than 250 independent judges from across the world comprising of leading industry experts, analysts, journalists and academics.

    Speaking on the awards, CEO of GSMA Ltd, John Hoffman, explained that the award recognized companies leading the way in different aspect of technology from 5G to intelligent connectivity.

    “The GLOMO Awards provide a world stage on which to celebrate the most inspirational and innovative developments across our industry, recognizing the companies and individuals leading the way in everything from 5G & intelligent Connectivity to emerging market innovation and diversity in tech. The awards attract a significant level of high-quality entries, so being nominated today is a great achievement. We wish everyone the very best of luck and we look forward to some exciting announcements at MWC Barcelona 2020”

    The six shortlisted African nominees for the awards include Africa’s leading telecommunications giants, MTN Group. It was nominated for its messaging app Ayoba, in the Most Innovative Mobile App category.

    Kenya’s Safaricom was shortlisted for Fuliza in the Best Mobile Innovation for Payment and Fintech category and also for DigiFarm in the category for Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets.

    Kenya’s Liquid Telecom was also shortlisted in the Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets for Increasing the incomes of freshwater fish farmers in Kenya.

    Other shortlisted African companies in Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets category include Upstream Zero-D from Ghana for making mobile internet access available to 250 million consumers without data in emerging markets and South Africa’s Nomanini for Nomanini Informal Trader Payments Platform.

    For the category of Best Mobile Innovation for Climate Action, Kenya’s M-KOPA Solar was shortlisted for it’s solar energy initiative.

    The GSMA MWC series is the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry, and the upcoming Awards includes special shortlisted companies from across Africa and the world.

    The shortlisted African companies will be evaluated alongside prominent global tech companies like Apple that was shortlisted in the Disruptive Device Innovation Award for Pro transparency and noise cancellation ability of the Apple Air pods.

    The presentation and declaration of the GLOMO award winners will take place during the MWC Barcelona in Barcelona from February 24 to 27, 2020.
