Meet Amaka Igwe

Uzoamaka Audrey Igwe was born on the 2nd of January 1963 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Education and Religious Studies from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Ibadan.

Before she got in the limelight for her work in ‘Checkmate’ she had participated in other creative works which include directing “Barber’s wisdom” during her days in the University of Ife. She taught people the ‘atilogwu’ dance as an A-level student of Idia college in Benin city.

Igwe did not actively pursue her passionate interest in the entertainment industry until 1991 when she created the television serial called Checkmate. The serial was followed by Fuji House of Commotion and later Rattle snake, and Violated.

Amaka Igwe launched her studio which she called Amaka Igwe Studios at a time when the Nollywood film industry was not being taken seriously. As a result of the high standards set, attained and maintained by Amaka Igwe Studios, the Nollywood film industry began to step up the quality of the content it released to its audience.

“Igwe will be remembered for raising the bar in movie and TV production in Nigeria, setting, attaining and maintaining high standards with her company Amaka Igwe Studios at a time when Nollywood was not taken seriously, for not conforming to low standards as a means to achieving success and for inspiring many Nigerian movie makers, Nigerians, and the world as a whole.”
