It’s the end of the year already and we at Technext have compiled a list of all the trends that rocked social media in 2019.

2019 was the year of high impact events that threw social media into a frenzy from the presidential election to Big Brother Nigeria. In this list we will give a rundown of these events that trended most this year.

#NigeriaDecides2019: presidential election

The 2019 presidential election was an interesting one. All Nigerians started the year eager to know who the next president will be. It was one of the biggest topics that began the year on all social media platforms.

Although, more than two contestants were in the race, the two most talked about were Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). It’s safe to say the election was concluded online before the official result was released.

Big Brother Naija: PepperThemGang2019

Big Brother Naija is a Nigerian reality television show in which 12 to 21 contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize worth N60,000,000 and other material gifts.

This year, the reality show kept Nigerians glued to their TV for 3 months while fans fought mostly on Twitter for their favorites to win. The contestant, Mercy Eke, was crowned winner of the fourth season. She also became the first female to emerge winner on the show.

The most notorious pastor of the year

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA)  became the most talked about pastor on social media in 2019.

It all started when Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo, called him out on his Instagram page over an alleged sexual relationship with female church members. Trust Nigerians, they took it up and trolled the pastor. The issues became worse when Busola Dakolo, the singer’s wife, also accused Fatoyinbo of rape, an allegation that split social media in two.

Andela staff lay off in Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya

During the year, Andela laid off 420 of its staff, and many people did not find it funny.

The 420 affected persons were junior engineers working on Andela’s D0 programme.

Regina Daniel’s marriage to billionaire Ned Nwoko

Teenage Nollywood actress Regina Daniels got married to Hon. Ned Nwoko, a 59-year-old billionaire.

Fans took to social media to blast her for marrying a man old enough to be her father. The gist really shook social media but the actress seems to be happy in her marriage.

Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2019

AFCON 2019 was another epic trend on social media during and after the game. It was discussed by Nigerians across the board.

Especially when the Super Eagles crushed South Africa’s Bafana Bafana out of AFCON as they flew to semi-finals. It was a moment of joy for Nigerians even though we lost out after then.

Wizkid’s collabo with Beyonce vs Davido’s collabo with Chris Brown

The two most talked about music acts in Nigeria, Wizkid and Davido, trended on social media this year for good reasons.

They both had collaboration with international artists, making it look like a competition and Nigerians took sides.

#10YearChallenge vs #FaceAppChallenge

From time to time, a challenge that connects people across the world begins to trend on social media. The #TenYearChallenge was done earlier this year, followed by the #FaceAppChallenge.

If you used social media this year, you probably noticed these trends across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: people posting before and after pictures a decade apart and youthful versus old pictures of themselves. Most Nigerians, especially celebrities on social media, participated in it.

Xenophobia

Xenophobic attacks broke out in South Africa. Businesses owned by non-South Africans were looted and destroyed. Several lives were lost.

The fight spilled over to Nigeria to the point that South African telecoms operator, MTN, closed all its service centres in Nigeria temporarily.

Anthony Joshua regained the WBA ‘super’, IBF and WBO titles with a rematch win over Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia

He became the most talked and celebrated on social media during that period.

Forbes announced Rihanna as richest female musician

Rihanna’s Fenty business endeavors officially made her the richest female musician in the world in 2019.

She was celebrated worldwide on all social media platforms.
