MTN’s Ayoba Messaging Platform Hits Milestone of 1 Million Active Users in Just 4 Months
Ayoba, MTN’s instant messaging platform has reached a milestone of 1 million active users within months of launching.
The landmark was announced today in a press statement by MTN Group. According to the group, Ayoba is an advanced communications application localised for consumers in African and the Middle East.
Speaking on the milestone, Rob Shuter, MTN Group President and CEO said that their customers deserved a platform to express their unique voice and honour their local languages.

Launched in August by MTN, Ayoba is a platform for customers to primarily send and receive messages. To make communication easier the app supports many local languages like Pidgin, Yoruba, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Swahili, Hausa, French and English spoken across the MTN markets.
Ayoba is currently operational in Nigeria and 7 other MTN markets including Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Afghanistan and South Africa. And there are already plans in place to launch in Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Benin and Rwanda before the year ends.
Some of Ayoba’s key features include Chat Now, which allow users to instantly send and receive texts to their contacts regardless of the device and network and also a Chat Everyone which allows sending of messages to contacts who don’t have the app.
Apart from the ability to communicate using local languages, the app provides end-to-end encryption for privacy and also has channels that host relevant content across various categories for users to subscribe to.
David Gilarranz, CEO MTN Digital, revealed that Ayoba is planning to add new features to enhance its offering. He added that they are working on an open digital platform to enable third-party innovation.

Shuter has said that money transfers will soon be available on the platform through Mobile Money.
Ayoba emphasises, MTN’s goal to bring more people into the digital world by providing them with affordable and simplified digital communication services.
Reaching 1 million active users just 4 months after launch shows that the telecom giant is successfully leveraging their vast customer base and may soon start to rival WhatsApp as the go-to chat platform.
