Opera founded start-up OPay has launched a public bus hailing service, OBus, in Lagos just weeks after it launched its tricycle hailing service OTrike in Aba. This was revealed in an exclusive with Techpoint Africa.
OPay was launched by Opera in 2016 as a mobile payment platform. But over the past year, the company has grown to become a multi-service commercial internet platform that offers a list of interesting services of which OBus is the latest.
OBus, like OPay’s other ride hailing services – ORide and OTrike – is a commercial transit service that can be accessed from the OPay app.
In an online dialogue, an OPay staff revealed to Techpoint that OBus will function more like the conventional bus but just more comfortable.
OBus is like normal buses but it is more comfortable and supports cashless payments,
OPay told Techpoint
The new OBus service operates using company branded hummer buses and is available for intrastate transport within Lagos.
OBus allow commuters to use a QR-enabled OBus card to pay for trips. The OBus card can be purchased from accredited OPay agents at designated stop points. The card comes in varying denominations with ₦200 being the lowest.
OBus makes use of a sensor reader in the buses to read the bar code on the OBus card to make payment after a trip. Alternatively, payments can be done through the OPay wallet.
Reacting to the recent launch of OBus, ijèoma a Nigerian on twitter lauded the quick expansion of OPay.
ijèoma is not alone. David A. Damilola, a tech enthusiast, also applauded OPay’s diversification.
OPay has launched a variety of verticals: Oride for bike hailing, OFood for food deliver, OTrike for tricycle hailing and OList for ads listing service. The OBus launch represents OPays 5th major vertical since its launch in Nigerian market in the last few months.
The platform has continued to rise following the funding round that saw it raise $50 million raised fund.
This exponential expansion of OPay shows that the Chinese owned company has plans to dominate the Nigerian market in all categories. It’s set to become the go-to platform for almost every service in everyday Nigerian life.
