The Wangari Maathai Impact Award has declared Founder of Data Science Nigeria, Dr Bayo (Olubayo) Adekanmbi, its winner. The award which recognises works that have far-reaching effects in the fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence recently took in applications for its 2019 round.
An extension of the legacy of the late Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win a Nobel Prize and the Founder of the Green Belt Environment, the award is open to any team, individual or organisation that has a track record of creating positive impact or demonstrating technical excellence in the field of Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence.
As the 2019 awardee, Dr Bayo (Olubayo) Adekanmbi will receive a fully-sponsored trip to attend NeurIPS 2019 and the Black in AI workshop – which is co-located with NeurIPS – in December. Adekanmbi will also be invited to speak at the Deep Learning Indaba in Nairobi in August 2019, and receive a cash prize of KES 70,000 which is equivalent to NGN 244,399.99.
Data Science Nigeria was founded by Adekanmbi to accelerate Nigeria’s development by applying Machine Learning to solve social and business problems faced by the country. The outfit also organises bootcamps and an Inter-Campus Machine Learning Competition to raise Data Scientists and Artificial Intelligence experts from all Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics.

Our vision is to see Nigeria become the outsourcing hub for international Data Science/Advanced Analytics/Big Data projects with opportunity to access 10% share of the global data science outsourcing projects, worth USD 3.3 billion in revenue by 2020.
