A team of Nigerian students have emerged joint winners of the Sub-Saharan regional finals of the 2019 Huawei ICT Competition. They emerged winners alongside Team Tanzania and thus earned a spot at the global finals in China.
The regional competition involved several students from over 100 universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Angola, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana and Mauritius.
After series of practical and theoretical examinations which covered the latest ICT technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, mobile networks and big data, the two teams emerged joint winners of the competition. Angola and Kenya, came joint second place.
All 4 teams will be travelling to Shenzhen, China for the global finals where they will slug it out with other regional finalists from around the world for the top prize.
According to the Vice President of Huawei, Xue Man, the ICT competition is in furtherance of Huawei’s efforts to foster ICT learning in Africa and bridge the gap between theoretical study and practical experience.

About Huawei ICT Competition
The Huawei ICT Competition is a global ICT talent competition for students in universities. Since its inception in 2015, the number of participants has grown exponentially and the competition has become one of the largest ICT events in the world.
The 2018/19 event attracted more than 1,000 universities from over 50 countries around the world under the slogan “Connection, Glory and Future.” The total number of students participating globally was 80,000, 28,000 of which are from Sub-Saharan Africa.
During the competition, through the road show, training, lectures and other special activities, the latest technology, information and industry trends are passed on to students and practitioners. This is to bridge the gap between theoretical study and practical experience, and get students better prepared to join the job market to increase its competitiveness.
