South Africa's WhereIsMyTransport Scoops $1.85m Funding as it Begins International Expansion

South African transport analytics company, WhereIsMyTransport, has closed a new $1.85 million funding round from Liil Ventures. The new funds come at a time when the London-based startup gets set to launch internationally.

WhereIsMyTransport is a data analytics company focusing on public transport sector. Founded in 2008, the startup gathers transport data from cities and integrates them to unto an open data platform. Using different technologies and processes, the platform captures network information for any mode including fares, frequencies, and journey duration.

Its platform provides useful data for both government and transit operators. Importantly too, its open platform enables third-party apps to provide commuters with real-time transport information.

WhereIsMyTransport allows for more efficient planning and regulation of mass transit systems by local governments. It also makes mass transportation more accessible, efficient and safe for the poor.

This is a fundamental urban development issue in emerging markets, but you can’t solve the problem if you cannot see the problem in the first place. We are building the definitive digital solution for sustainable urban mobility… the objective is to not only help governments move citizens around, but also to make it possible for citizens to move around safely, reliably and predictably.

The platform now houses data for more than a dozen major cities in Africa. Globally, it houses data for more than 30 major cities from emerging markets.

Since its creation ten years ago, WhereIsMyTransport has been able to raise $5.8 million through three rounds of funding. However, the latest funding round is key to the company’s international expansion plans.

The company is on track to include more cities from India, South East Asia, and Latin America into its platform.

“We are delighted to welcome Liil Ventures to our global team, alongside trusted partner Goodwell Investments,” said Devin de Vries, CEO of WhereIsMyTransport. “Not only are we strategically aligned, Liil also brings significant go-to-market value in the Latin American market, and a complimentary portfolio including Cabify and What3Words,” he added.
