Facebook Messenger Introduces Boomerang and Selfie Camera Modes With AR Features

Facebook Messenger has introduced a set of new camera features into its platform. The new features include the ‘Selfie’ and ‘Boomerang’ camera modes, as well as more augmented reality (AR) stickers and filters.

    — The Verge (@verge) December 18, 2018

According to a post by the platform, the features were rolled out to enable users enjoy sending messages during the festive period by using the different effects.

“With more than 20 million people using camera effects on Messenger every day, we’re excited to be launching even more ways to make your seasonal messages fun, including two new modes in Messenger’s camera — Boomerang and Selfie, along with new AR stickers and holiday effects.”

    How The New Features Work

The ‘Boomerang’ camera mode allows users to record a small clip of themselves that plays forward and backward in a loop (something Facebook already offers with its other platform, Instagram). The ‘Selfie’ mode will allow users to capture portrait-styled pictures which keeps the subject in focus while the background blurs.

With these two new additions, Facebook Messenger which already offers Normal, Video, and Text camera modes, now has a total of 5 modes.

The New Facebook Messenger Augmented Reality Feature

To spice up the photos, Messenger also provides an augmented reality feature that lets you place Messenger’s stickers in your photos and videos. Stickers can be taken directly from chats and placed in pictures.

The new Messenger features are already rolled out to both Android and iOS users and will be available in both Messenger’s newly redesigned app and its older version.
