Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, MTN is stepping up the quality of contents on its MTN Play platform. In early November, the telco will host the MTN Digital Content Conference (MTNDCC). The event aims to help shore up popularity and contents for its struggling #MTNShortz video platform.

#MTNShortz is a platform empowering video content creators to showcase their work and earn from it. Contents on the platform include short exclusive Movies, Series, Animations, Inspirational talk, Religious talk series among many others.
The platform is strictly for streaming videos without options to download the content. Content developers earn from the platform when MTN users access the contents and pay daily channel subscription charges.
But #MTNShortz is not new by any stretch of the imagination. Shortz is a key part of the MTN Play portal, a portal designed to be an all-in-one home for mobile contents for MTN customers. However, both platforms have underperformed. More importantly, they have largely failed to meet up with modern trends in both design and features in the mobile digital universe. Additionally, MTN Shortz has long lacked quality contents even though MTN has done plenty of work publicizing it to users.

The MTN Digital Content Conference will try to change MTN Play’s fortunes. It will look to re-energize MTN Shortz and provide the platform the depth in contents it currently lacks.
On November 5 and 6, the conference will host a select list of 80 content creators, both professional and amateur. The goal will be to bolster understanding about the platform and show creatives interesting ways to earn from their work.
The event is also aimed at improving the local creatives network in Nigeria as well as provide mentorship for budding creators. Participants get to interact and connect with successful creatives who have earned international repute.
MTN will surely hope that the conference would yield results. The company needs to improve revenues from value added services alongside data services to make up for voice and SMS revenue losses. Going forward, MTN alongside other telcos know that digital services like Whatsapp have a huge tendency to disrupt voice revenues. Thus, developing long term alternative streams of income is the logical way to go now.
