    Seedstars World has released a list of 10 startups competing for top prize at this year’s Seedstars Lagos competition holding on October 19. This year’s competition is the sixth regional leg held in Nigeria.

    Meet the start-ups:

    Aspire Power Solutions: A startup using data analytics to provide affordable and clean energy solutions to energy consumers across Sub Saharan Africa. Presently operating only in Nigeria, the startup has plans to expand further.

    Beat Drone: This startup provides drone technology for multiple uses such as site mapping, inspection and chemical spraying. Presently it works with companies in agriculture, energy and infrastructure services.

    Biya: A chat-based payment platform that allows users make payments and receive payments across social and messaging platforms such as Slack, Skype, Facebook Messenger and Telegram.

    Bridgebooks: A simplified accounting analytics solution provider. It helps users take control of their business and effortlessly manage their finances with a focus on business growth.

    Chekkit Technologies: Chekkit is a blockchain-powered anti-counterfeiting platform that offers real-time supply-chain tracking and customer experience analytics.

    DropQue: Still in beta, DropQue is a platform for secure video interviews that simplifies the recruitment processes for companies.

    Insight Africa: Insight Africa developed StudyLab, a powerful resource that helps students improve their math and science problem solving abilities. It provides them with thousands of math and science problems, alongside deep and detailed video solutions.

    Natterbase: A freelancing platform that allows companies recruit engineers and other developers securely and with ease.

    NextCounsel: A Practice Management System designed to help law firms manage and track cases from the first contact through to the last payment effectively without hassle. It’s an all in one management solution for cases, documents, human resources and financial management.

    Termii: This is a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform leveraging personalised offline and online communication gateways to help companies secure and retain customers.

    The selected startups get the chance to pitch in front of a panel of experienced tech investors and entrepreneurs.

    Some notable judges of 2018 Seedstars Lagos Competition would include: Ifenyiwa Ugochukwu, Director of Partnerships and Evaluation at the Tony Elumelu Foundation; Ahmed Umar, COO of Wennovation Hub; and Chike Asiodu, Managing Director of TextNigeria. Seedspace General Manager, Alessia Balducci will also be judging the start-ups.

    What’s in it for the winner?

    The winning startup of  the 2018 Seedstars Lagos Competition automatically joins the Seedspace tech hub located in Lagos. At the hub the startup gets co-working space and mentoring. In addition to this the winning startup will represent Nigeria at the Seedstars Africa Regional competition slated for December 13.

    But most importantly, the winner of the Lagos leg scores the opportunity to compete at the all important Seedstars Summit. Holding in Switzerland on April 2018, the winner at the Summit carts away $1 million equity investment.

While still offering its free inward remittance service, the fintech has also delved into outflow and recently launched a feature that allows its users in Nigeria and Canada to send money to the US and Europe free of charge.

“We are super excited to announce that Nigerian and Canadian users can now send money to the United Kingdom and Europe via the @Lemonade.Finance app for free,” the company said.

    UK based crypto company, @Luno_global has revealed UK based crypto company, @Luno_global has revealed that its user base has hit a milestone of 7 million in 2021. This is a growth from more than 6 million customers in January 2020.

According to CEO Swanepoel, Luno’s numbers have been increasing month-on-month over the last seven years. However, this is the first time it is seeing an acceleration of this magnitude. 

In general, this year has been a great year for cryptos. The Bitcoin rally spurred by the entrance of institutional investors caused a momentous growth in the industry.

    Ugandan fintech startup, @NumidaTech has raised $2 Ugandan fintech startup, @NumidaTech has raised $2.3 million in seed funding.

The seed round was led by Pan-African payments company, MFS Africa with participation from DRK Foundation, Equilibria Capital Management, Segal Family Foundation and other angel investors.

Backed with new funding, the startup is looking to pilot in a new market outside East Africa, with Ghana a likely location. Numida will also introduce additional financial services such as payments, micro-insurance and deposits to customers.

    Nigerian students have revealed their disappointme Nigerian students have revealed their disappointment at being unable to register for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) due to inherent challenges as regards the mandatory National Identification Number (NIN).

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) has commenced UTME registration for the 2021/22 session and requires all candidates to provide their NIN and a linked mobile number.

Now that the UTME registration has commenced, many candidates who are yet to obtain the NIN or link their SIMs have complained that they cannot even complete the first stage of applications.
