Good day folks! We trust the previous week was awesome for you.

Quite a lot did happen in the tech and social media space in the course of the past week. However, I am going to share some important ones with you.

Nollywood Actor, Jim Iyke, Set to Launch Mr. Taxi’ and Take on Uber, Taxify

Popular Nigerian actor, Jim Iyke, is all set to embark on his most challenging adventure ever. The ace Nollywood actor has announced a new on-demand chauffeur service called, Mr. Taxi.

The new company is expected to kick off operations on October 5, with Mr. Iyke as CEO.

This sounds interesting as Mr. Taxi will operate in the South East Region of Nigeria when it launches. This includes states like Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi.

It is a challenging move for the Nollywood actor as the on-demand car service industry has a (slight) high barrier for new entrants. We wish him well in this new development.

The Global Messaging Platform, WhatsApp, has Rolled Out a New Conference Call Feature

During the week,  Whatsapp, rolled out a new conference call feature for its IOS and Android users. The new feature is designed to let the platform’s users hold calls –both video and voice, with multiple participants.

This is an improvement for the Facebook-owned platform to its already available video and voice call features. The new feature allows a user to add up to 3 participants easily (plus the caller, making it 4) for both voice and video calls.

So, are you a keen user of the messaging platform and need to make a group call with friends, colleagues, or family?

Minimum Wage, NLC and TUC Begin Nationwide Strike

Also trending on social media is the directive given by the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC, and the Trade Union Congress TUC to all state councils and industrial unions to begin nationwide strike based on the Government’s failure to meet its demand on the new minimum wage.

Nigerians have taken to social media to vent their anger especially students who complained bitterly of having spent more than their normal year in school.

Instagram Co-Founders Resign From Facebook-Owned Company

Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have announced they are leaving the photo-sharing app bought by Facebook six years ago, setting a new test for the parent company as it works to quell mounting turmoil.

Their resignation raises more questions about the future of Facebook and whether or not Instagram’s independence would be eroded. However, Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, praised the departing Instagram leaders for “their combined creative talents,” saying “I’ve learned a lot working with them.”

“I wish them all the best and I’m looking forward to seeing what they build next,” Zuckerberg said in a statement released by Facebook.
