NIPOST Goes Digital, Launches Address Verification and Digital Addressing Systems

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) today held its stakeholders’ conference and launched two new addressing tools –Digital Addressing System and Address Verification System. The event, which had the theme “Addressing Critical Challenges in Courier and E-Commerce Industry” was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, GRA-Ikeja, Lagos.

Opening the floor for the event was the Post-Master General (PMG) of NIPOST himself, Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi. He noted that the event is another milestone towards bridging the addressing gap in Nigeria.

According to Adegbuyi,  these tools would provide an efficient and effective addressing system that tackles the militating against effective service delivery system in Nigeria.

He also noted that NIPOST would not be able to do this alone without mutual concerns from stakeholders to find finding solutions to the problems associated with addressing challenges in Nigeria and “instituting a culture of excellent service delivery using the latest technologies”.

Also present at the event were the Corps Marshall Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi; the Minister of Communications, Barr. Adebayo Shittu; and several e-commerce/courier industry stakeholders.

Other speakers also hailed NIPOST for the innovations and encouraged other stakeholders to form a synergy with NIPOST for a sustainable high quality of service which is quintessential to the survival of the industry in Nigeria.

On his part, the Minister for Communication said that, soon, with these sets of innovations, “NIPOST would be the number one government agency bringing in the highest amount of money into government coffers.”

There was also a session for unveiling the addressing tools: Address Verification System (AVS), system where addresses are verified by going to the location to confirm; and Digital Addressing System (DAS), a system of over 330 billion, 3 by 3 square addresses, providing every house in Nigeria with a unique digital address.

As for the AVS, Nigerians can get gainfully occupied by helping the system to verify these addresses and getting paid in return.

Lastly, to crown the event for the day, there was a panel session on the theme “Addressing Critical Challenges in Courier and E-Commerce Industry”. This session involved key stakeholders across the various concerned sectors: Mr. Adeseyoju, MD DHL Africa; Mr Godie Iyamu, Uber; Mr Siyanbola Oladapo, President, Association of Nigeria Courier Operators (ANCO); Mr Jonas Agwu, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC); Mr Ahmed Rasheed, Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST); and Moderator, Mr. Joe Abah.

The panellists all reiterated that these innovations by NIPOST would change the face of the industry both in e-commerce and Courier services. However, they would only work if there are Public-Private Partnerships as well as the trust of the people.

We look forward to the new times ahead!
