15 African Tech Hubs and Venture Funds to Participate in First Ever VilCap Communities Africa Program

15 founders of entrepreneur support organisations (ESO)  have been chosen to participate in the first ever VilCap Communities Africa programs holding in September and October. These ESO include tech hub founders and early stage investment company founders.

Still in its first year, the program was newly launched by Village Capital and UK Department for International Development (DFID). VilCap Communities Africa aims to bolster the entrepreneurial ecosystem across Sub-Saharan Africa. It provides entrepreneurs with the tools, resources, and connections they need to spur impact investment.

“There are exciting things happening here in Africa, and a lot of wisdom developing about what works specifically to this context”, says Rachel Crawford at Village Capital. “But there’s a lot of room to grow. We want to bring together leaders from different parts of Sub-Saharan Africa to share what’s working and build a community of best practices.”

This year, the VilCap Communities Africa program will host three forums in three African cities. The first forum holds in Lagos, Nigeria; another in Nairobi, Kenya; and the third in Cape Town, South Africa.

However, applications for the program opened for the first way back in July 2018. And according to reports, over 200 incubators, accelerators, and startup funds applied for the program.  However, that figure was narrowed down until the 15 finalists were selected.

Additionally, the 15 finalists are further divided into two separate cohorts. The first cohorts will attend the Lagos forum of the program. And they include Energy Generation, a power, and hardware organization; Global Entrepreneurship Network Freetown; and DR Congo VC firm Ingenious City.

Others in the Lagos cohort include The Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria; Suguba, an entrepreneurship platform; the Innovation Village, a Ugandan tech accelerator; and Nigerian VC firm, Ventures Platform.

Meanwhile, for the Nairobi forum, the cohorts include Andela; Anza, a Tanzanian tech hub; Ethiopian tech hub, BlueMoon; Entreprenarium, a Rwandan tech hub; Etrilabs, from the Benin Republic; Jokkolabs; and the Southern Africa Venture Partnership.

The Lagos forum holds September 24-28, 2018, while the Nairobi forum holds October 22-26, 2018. The final forum in Cape Town holds November 12-14, 2018.
