Held in Lagos, the hackathon, themed “Data Hack”, was sponsored by Access Bank Plc in partnership with Africa Fintech Foundry (AFF). It was a 48-hour hackathon event designed to bring together multiple teams of smart-thinkers to brainstorm and solve the problems of the financial sector, build solutions that would enhance, and add value to the FinTech Industry.

The event had about 115 participants of different specs –talented developers, designers, problem-solvers, out-of-the-box thinkers, and code magicians, participating in the event. These participants were grouped into 26 teams to provide solutions to three problem statements within 48 hours and pitch their solutions to the judges in 3 mins. The problem statements were:

  • How financial technology can address supply chain challenges (from finished goods to retail) in the FMCG sector.
  • Leveraging big-data analytics, identity management, and behavioural analysis to identify customers’ needs, providing investment advice & lending services.
  • Financial Inclusion for the Agric and related sectors with a focus on improving credit scoring and financing opportunities for small and medium scale operators.

The panel of judges included James Todd, CFO Unilever Africa; Victor Etuokwu, Executive Director, Personal Banking, Access Bank Plc; Bayo Adekanmbi, Chief Technical Officer (CTO), MTN; Iyin Aboyeji, Managing Director, Flutterwave; and Ayodeji Balogun, Country Manager, AFEX.

The winning team, Cosmos Constellation (C-Stell) had created a system to reduce demurrage caused by human errors by creating a system that uses optical character recognition to fetch text from scanned documents. It also offers the tracking of shipments across ports.

Coming second is Team Ace with their solution called TrackIt, a system chat gives up to date tracking of shipments, check analytics and provide information of all payments accrued and shipments in the process or honoured in real time.

While in third place is Team BAT (Building Awesome Technologies) with their Smart assistant solution that uses data, Deep-learning algorithm and Internet of things (IoT) to aid and guide the users in making informed decisions while keeping engagement simple.

The last edition of this event was won by Voice IT, a team that designed an Android application that helps temporarily or permanently disabled bank customers to carry out transactions with the aid of a natural voice interface with artificial intelligence.
