Submissions are now allowed for the 2018 AppsAfrica Innovation Awards. The AppsAfrica Innovation Award is an annual ceremony to honour African innovators in mobile and technology.

In its fourth edition, the award promises winners maximum industry recognition and global exposure. Holding in Cape Town, South Africa, the award ceremony is also an engaging event that brings together hundreds of industry players and promises plenty of networking.

This year, the award welcomes entries into 14 categories. One category is the Disruptive Innovation Award, which identifies advances in business models and businesses’ use of technology.

Other categories include Health Tech Award; Best African App Award; Enterprise Solution Award; Blockchain Award; Changing Africa Award; Mobility Award; News & Entertainment Award; Educational Award; FinTech Award; AgriTech Award; Social Impact Award; IoT Award; and mCommerce Award.

Entry is opened to all African companies, both startups, and established firms. However, entry into the awards is not free; there is a $125 price tag for each submission. But startups in business for less than 18 months get a free entry. That evens the odds somewhat and helps put a spotlight on novel ideas.

Deadline for submissions is 7 September while the award finalists will be announced in October. The award ceremony itself holds in South Africa on 12 November.

In previous years, the AppsAfrica Innovation Awards have drawn quite an interest. In 2016, it received over 200 applications from 25 African countries but narrowed this number to 44 finalists spread across 10 categories.
