In recent times, the education system has tried to improve competitiveness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics related courses. In a bid to improve innovation in science and technology, the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) has announced the 2018 National Information Technology Whizkids Competition.

The Nigerian Computer Society, the umbrella body of all Information Technology professionals in Nigeria, is in charge of the yearly National Information Technology Whizkids Competition. Information available on the NCS official website has revealed that the competition is open to all secondary school student across the federation.

The NCS also said that it “considers the competition as a development process and encouragement of excellence amongst secondary school students across the country, who are the future leaders of this great nation.”

The competition is open to secondary school students in both private and public schools across the nation and it is in 3 stages. For the first stage, at the state level, schools in different states will compete. Successful candidates will then move to the zonal competition with venues in designated zones and then on to the grand finale where the remaining schools will battle for the winning prize. Only SS1 and SS2 students are eligible to participate in the competition. The rewards include computer products, cash prizes and scholarships as well as consolation prizes for all contestants.

Last year, the winners of the competition were Pen Resources Academy, Gombe state (first place), The Ambassador College, Ogun state (second place) and Gombe High school, Gombe state (third place).

To participate in this year’s competition, interested schools are to complete a form available on the NCS website with the details of two students and evidence of payment to a designated account.

We look forward to a wonderful competition where young minds meet and potentials are unleasehed in our quest to have a better Nigeria where innovations in science and technology are commonplace.
