Indications that explains the apparent low key execution of #GloFreedataday on Friday have emerged. Reports have it that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has ordered the management of Globacom Ltd to immediately suspend the implementation of the Promotion from its network.
According to the report, the NCC in a letter dated 10th August 2017, with reference number NCC/Glo/ F76/vol/ 13/2017, described the action of the telecom company as “a clear departure from the terms and condition of the approval given for the “Glo Overload Promotion”.
It is evident that the promo went on as scheduled but the publicity was tempered and the number of beneficiaries reduced accordingly:
Didn't meet the requirements. Please watch out for another sms announcing the freebies, conditions attached. SG pic.twitter.com/o8twF6QzqG

It is apparent that the NCC had initially granted an approval for the promo and had decided to rescind its approval apparently for promoting the promo in the media. The letter signed by Sunday Dare, executive commissioner, Stakeholders Management, and Abdullahi Maikano, director Consumer Affairs, on behalf of the NCC states:
“Please refer to the Commission’s letter of 14th March 2017 conveying approval for your Glo Overload Promotion. It has however come to our notice that Globacom Nig Ltd has been implementing the above regulatory approval in breach especially given your recent media campaign on the “Glo Free Data Offer”, a clear departure from the terms and condition of the approval given for the Glo Overload Promotion.Consequent upon the above, you are hereby directed to suspend implementation of the Glo Overload Promotion from your network with immediate effect.”
Recall that Globacom declared Friday, August 11, 2017, as the first FREE DATA DAY on the Glo network for all its eligible subscribers to get 200 MB free data to enjoy a one day of free browsing, chatting, streaming, downloading, uploading and lots more.
Some subscribers have benefitted from the freebie and some subscribers are already are lamenting the announcement and describing the move by NCC as a kill-joy:
We do not know what the details of the approval entail or if Globaccomm ought to announce the #GloFreedataday far and wide. What this calls to mind is the decision of the NCC to have a price floor and suspend it later after pressures from subscribers. We hope that they reason with the users this time again.
